A visit to Attingham Park, Atcham, Shrewsbury Wednesday 27th September 2023
With a stop at Cannock Chase Outlet Village for a coffee break and some browsing, or possibly shopping. This outlet is very new and is run by the same firm as Cheshire Oaks, but is as yet considerably smaller. As usual lunch will be a carvery, this time at the Spread Eagle, on the A5 near Penkridge.
In the afternoon we will visit Attingham Park. The building you will see is a Neo-Classical Georgian Mansion, typical for this period in that many buildings of this era were up-dated with a refacing or in this case encapsulation to the existing mansion to create a very modern luxurious house of the period. The house was built in 1785, with gardens designed by Landscape Architect Humphry Repton. Part of the house tour includes the basement or servant`s quarters. It is very interesting to see some of the table settings with plates set for the servants and staff, with written information about their age, duties and wages. Even how much their French Chef was paid!
